Residential Checklist

  1. Know where your property lines are if the fence is to go up to the line. A survey may be necessary to establish lines.
  2. Determine if any private utilities (pool lines, sprinklers, electrical supply to out buildings etc.) will be near the proposed fence. Have these located by a private firm, as Diggers Hotline will not mark them.  Diggers Hotline only marks PUBLIC utilities.
  3. Learn all local fence regulations in your municipality and any covenants that apply in your subdivision.
  4. Obtain a permit if required.
  5. Determine your layout (see example below). Note any obstacles that could compete with your fence installation including (but not limited to) trees, shrubs, ground conditions, underground utilities, etc.
